
This is an excerpt from the Danish Road Traffic Act’s special Rules applicable to cyclists:
- Cyclists shall always keep to the right in the outermost right-hand lane in the direction of traffic.
- Cyclists intending to proceed straight ahead or turn left shall continue to keep to the right on the road when approaching an intersection. However, if one or more lanes are marked as reserved for vehicular traffic intending to turn right, a cyclist may instead keep to the right in the nearest lane which is not reserved for traffic turning right
- Cyclists intending to turn left shall proceed through the intersection to the opposite side and is not allowed to turn until such manoeuvre can be performed without impeding other traffic.
- Bicycles are not allowed to be ridden on pavements or footpaths unless otherwise provided.
- Children below the age of 6 are not allowed to ride a bicycle unless they are escorted by a person who is at least 15 years old.
- Adult cyclists (15 years old or older) may transport up to two children below eight years old on the bicycle.
- Adults may transport up to two children no matter their age in a bicycle trailer (if it is specially designed for children).
- Bicycles must be equipped with a bell, a white reflecting device visible from the front, yellow reflectors on the pedals, a wheel-mounted yellow spoke reflector on each wheel (or white circular reflector strips on the tyres or on the wheel rims) as well as a red reflector on the rear.
- A two-wheeled bicycle must be equipped with at least one light at the front and one light at the rear.
- A bicycle light must be visible at a distance of at least 300 metres without being blinding. Furthermore, the light must be visible from the side-on. The headlight must be white, bluish or yellowish in colour whereas the rear light shall be red.
- All bicycles must have their lights switched on from sunset till sunrise as well as in bad weather conditions, e.g. when it is foggy or it is snowing heavily.
- Cyclists must show their intentions clearly when turning left or right or when stopping.
- Using a handheld mobile phone when cycling is illegal.
