Signposted cycle routes

Denmark has around 12,000 km of sign-posted cycle routes. The signs make it easier to navigate. You simply have to know the route name, number or logo and follow the signs along the route. The routes overlap on several occasions, so you can easily create your own trip by combining different routes. It is safe to travel the Danish cycle routes since for the most part, the routes follow small roads with little traffic, quiet forest roads, designated cycle lanes, cycle paths and abandoned railway tracks.

The Danish Cyclists Federation publishes and sells different cycle maps and guides where you can see the routes as well as nearby roads, sights and choice of accommodation.

Skilt for national cykelruteThe national cycle routes
Denmark has 11 national cycle routes with an aggregate route network of more than 4,500 km. The routes are designed to take into account the experiences on offer, road safety and the road’s or path’s suitability for cyclists (approx. 80% of the routes are on tarmac).

You can find further descriptions of the individual routes and see them mapped out on The Danish Road Directorate’s website, trafikken.dk. The site also enables you to export the route coordinates to a GPX file.

The national cycle routes are marked with small, square signs with a pictogram depicting a bicycle and a white route number in a red field on a blue background (route 10 on Bornholm, however, is on a green background). The uneven numbers 1-9 run north-to-south and the even numbers 2-8 run east-to-west. Furthermore, there are two roundtrips; Around Bornholm (route 10) and The Limfjord Route (route 12).

Skilt for regional cykelruteRegional and local routes
In addition to the national cycle routes, Denmark also has a network of regional and local cycle routes which have their own signposting. The regional route signs are designed from the same principle as the national signs – although with white route numbers from 16 to 99 on a blue background. The local route signs are designed in a similar manner to the regional signs – but with route numbers from 100 to 999.
