Canoe

Canoes are popular in Denmark. Often several canoes set off together, taking picnic hampers and blankets along – all set for a great day out in the country.

A week or a couple of days in a canoe soothes the soul. Travel on calm water, follow the slight current downstream and then paddle for a change when crossing a lake. Get close to the wildlife and experience the countryside with all your senses.

Canoe hire companies

You can easily paddle a canoe over quite long distances in Denmark, staying overnight as you go. Gudenåen and Susåen are the best-known rivers for canoeing trips, but Skjern Å and Nørreåen are also good for spending several days in a canoe. There are canoe hire shops and scope for overnight stays all the way along the rivers – and well-signposted areas where you can go ashore.

Routes

You can easily canoe on several Danish fjords – follow the coastline into small coves and bays and round the points and peninsulas. There are many routes to follow on Limfjorden in North Jutland, and in the fjords of Zealand: Roskilde Fjord, Holbæk Fjord and Isefjord are also easily navigable by canoe.

There is no specific list of suitable canoe routes, but you can contact a couple of canoe agents. They can help you find a route and a stretch of water that suit your energy levels and skills.
