Many meeting and conference venues are considering the environment in various ways, which gives you the opportunity to make your next meeting or event even more sustainable.
|
The Bella Center knows that the environmental issues need to be taken seriously and as a consequence a 75-meter-high Vestas wind turbine is placed in front of the large convention center to produce power. The impressive wind turbine is expected to produce enough power over the next year for approx. 300 average Danish households for an entire year. In the convention centre's front hall a measuring station has been set up, which constantly shows the amount of power produced by wind turbines in Denmark. At Bella Center they have also invested in other energy saving measures, including installing LED lights, insulation and more efficient heating systems. This has led to a 20% decrease in CO2 emissions on 2007 levels. Furthermore there is no longer offered bottled water at Bella Center, instead they offer filtered tap water, thus avoiding the waste incurred in using 100,000 plastic bottles per year. The Centre serves only organic Fair-trade coffee, and meals are prepared with organic products on demand.

Tivoli Gardens has also joined the green trend and entered into a climate partnership with Dong Energy (one of the leading energy companies in Northern Europe), which is to make Tivoli the world's first amusement park to run on renewable energy by 2010. The goal is to reduce Tivoli's energy consumption and ensure that the consumption is covered by CO2-neutral production facilities, and therefore a multi-fuel power plant along with three new wind turbines, one of which will display the Tivoli brand, will soon be a reality at the nearby Avedore Power Plant. In the end of 2010 the Tivoli Congress Center will be opened and welcome guests to its environmentally friendly surroundings, seating up to 4,000 people. The centre will have Green Key certification and it is located only few minutes by foot from the City Hall Square.

The Scandic hotel chain is another good example of green venues. They provide a full package of their interpretation of sustainable meetings. Their program includes using eco-labelled products whenever possible and separating waste as well as serving food on china and tap water in bulks instead of bottled water. In 2008 Scandic was awarded the IMEX Green Meetings Award for its sustainable meetings products. The newly opened and most environmentally friendly hotel in Denmark is the Crowne Plaza Copenhagen Towers. Here the concept is to show guests how luxury and sustainability can converge with ease, and also how sustainability and economy can support each other.

The Crowne Plaza is the first hotel in Denmark to have all its energy provided by renewable energy sources. For instance, Denmark's first groundwater-based system is used to extract water for cooling and heating from 100 meters below the earth's surface -saving up to 90% of the energy consumption. Moreover, all facades are covered with ultra thin, high technology solar panels generating a yearly energy amount equivalent to the consumption of 55 Danish familiy houses. Indeed, Crowne Plaza Copenhagen Towers sets new and higher standards for future sustainable venues.
